Yaca is a free-improvisation duo formed in early 2017 by musicians Rodrigo Montoya from São Paulo, Brazil, and Ignacio Moreno Fluxà from Santiago, Chile. Yaca's sound shows a convergence of the sonic roots of both musicians, combining the experimental spirit of free improvisation with the ethereal atmospheres of drone and ambient. The outcome is a meditative, cathartic and minimalist sound that blends the best aspects of Rodrigo’s and Ignacio’s bodies of work.

Members and history

Rodrigo Montoya is a Brazilian musician from São Paulo. Involved in the free-improvisation music scene since 2003, he is one of the founding members of the Abaetetuba collective. After a few years playing soprano sax and classical guitar, he switched to shamisen and biwa, traditional Japanese instruments which he studied in the Liberdade district in São Paulo. In 2008 Rodrigo relocated to London and performed regularly in England, Spain and the Netherlands. After a 3-year stay he returned to Brazil and resumed his work with Abaetetuba, with performances throughout South America.

Ignacio Moreno Fluxà is a Chilean musician, better known by his solo act, ihä. ihä began in 2011 and although its sound can be associated with drone and ambient, its eclecticism often transcends the boundaries of specific genres. Ignacio's sonic journeys are peaceful yet courageous. As evidenced through his discography, which comprises over a dozen releases, the introspective and minimalist spirit of his music evokes dreamy soundscapes and misty atmospheres. His albums have been published in Chile, Peru and the United States.

In early February 2017, Rodrigo and Ignacio met for the first time through a mutual friend and recorded an improvised session at the Ce chemin est le bon home-studio in Santiago, Chile. This marked the beginning of Yaca, whose debut album, I, was co-released by Chilean record labels Manjar Records and Ce chemin est le bon in June 2017.
